Questions & Answers
Will Super Y-League teams be able to participate in US Youth Soccer state, regional and national tournaments?

Marcos: This will vary from state to state, depending on any restrictions within a team's state association. Super Y-League teams are free to enter any worldwide competition, including US Youth Soccer-sponsored events, as long as local and state rules allow such teams to participate.

Weibe: There are many teams that have entered outside SYL activities within tournaments or abroad. Most tournaments are open to all U.S. Soccer members. A SYL team could apply to the Dallas Cup, Sun Bowl, Surf Cup, etc., if the tournament is open to all USSF members. Teams that wish to compete in tournaments or games abroad may do so as well as a SYL team.

What is the future beyond the Super Y-League?

Marcos: It is our feeling that US Soccer will ultimately create its own national open cup for youth teams, a cup competition for all members of the US Soccer family, (and we strongly urge the US Youth Soccer to do so.) However, because of the vast number of teams out there, there will never be a true national champion that can prove it stands head and shoulders above all the other teams in the United States.

Weibe: Overall I think that there are going to be some big youth changes in the U.S. in 2002. Programs such at the National Association of Competitive Soccer Clubs, MLS announcing the proposals of youth academies, the ODP designation of the PDL and W-League will certainly change the focus on youth development in the country. I think that the U.S. is on the right path.
