Could you describe a typical competitive playing season for the Super Y-League?
Marcos: Ultimately we see this as a six-month league. By year five of our plan, we would like to achieve a six-month season which would run from mid-spring to late fall. That would give us enough time to get in 30-40 games, plus allow kids and teams one weekend in every month to play in tournaments, ODP program competitions and experience some foreign travel and other competitions. We want to build in enough flexibility so that teams and regions can work with their respective associations. The natural gaps that will be built into the schedule will allow local teams and regions to coordinate scheduling.
Weibe: This will vary region from region. Some regions will begin in March, while some begin towards the end of April and early May. Each region is somewhat unique due to climate, different soccer activities, scholastic sports, beginning and end of the school year, etc. Each region collectively designs their own region. This includes number of teams, games, start dates and age groups. We leave it to the soccer people within these regions to give us the best input on what they need to have for a successful season. Some regions in the 2002 season have opted to continue "Regional Cup" play after the regular season and the National Finals. This will include anywhere from an additional 10-16 games per team if they want to participate.
Until a U.S. Soccer Youth Open Cup exist, we will keep our season between 12-14 games between the months of March and August. With the conflicts of other youth activities in this country, such as the USYSA Snickers Championship, we are unable to extend our season past 14 games. Right now, I think that this is a comfortable number for teams. Once the time comes and we can move towards twenty games, we will within the next few seasons.
Who can compete in the Super-Y League?
Marcos: Any player can compete in the Super-Y League. There will be no restriction on who can participate and which team a player can compete for. The league will have a 26-player roster. Teams wanting to restrict themselves to an 18-player roster may do so. There is also the possibility that teams could carry their regular 18 players, plus another eight "floaters" who would be available for Super Y-League play.
We encourage all athletes, regardless of race, origin or financial background, to compete in the Super Y-League. A particularly interesting feature of our first season was the inclusion of an all-Hispanic team from East Los Angeles. That's indicative of the types of teams that are not only free to come into the league, but teams that we will actively recruit, as long as the standard of play and the standard of the club is consistent with Super Y-League requirements.
Weibe: In addition to Francisco's comments, we want the best clubs, teams and players in the Super Y-League. Every game should be a 2-1, 1-0, 3-2 game. Clubs should have a high level staff and facilities. It is the responsibility of these clubs to get the best players regardless of where they come from. They can come from inner city programs, competing clubs or within their own infrastructure.
